Light gives us energy, it gives us life. Visiting Vejer de la Frontera will carry you away to an atmosphere of tranquility from times past. The historic centre of town is located on a hill at 200m above sea level, sourrounded by medieval walls and with a small castle from the 10th century it provides the setting for some unforgettable experiences.
Vejer was declared of special historic interest in 1976 and two yeaars later was later awarded the national prize for town improvement, thanks to the architecture of moorish influence that can be found in many structures throughout the town.
Must-see’s and do’s
A good starting point is the Castle, built between the 10th – 11th centuries, it is located in the oldest inhabited area of Vejer. Visit the two courtyards, admire the Moorish gate and the herring-bone floor which prevented slippage when riding in on horseback. The Castle was the residence of the Duque of Medina Sindonia from the 14th century onwards.
The Bastion of La Segur is an important part of the historical remains in Vejer. It is of more recent constructions than the defensive walls, but is dated from the 15th century. From its summit one can admire spectacular views of the surrounding countryside.
Festivals and celebrations
Throughout the year there are a series of events when Vejer is at its most picturesque, such as during Carnival in February. Locals revel in masquerading performing satirical choruses and spending time with friends and family over the period of a week. The Bull Run on Easter Sunday consists of letting loose a bull and have it pursue daring participants along the main streets of Vejer. The evening that follows is one of revelry and telling tall tales of the day’s run. Other colourful celebrations include Easter Week and the Spring Fair in April, Midsummer’s Eve and in August the Festivities in hounour of Vejer’s patron saint, “Our Lady of the Olive”.
