One of Vejer’s major attractions is its proximity to some of the best beaches of the Costa de la Luz. Contrary to many of Spain’s other costas the beaches around Vejer remain undeveloped. From the beach of El Palmar, passing through Zahora, to the lighthouse at Trafalgar there are more than 11km of uninterrupted, fine golden sand beaches. This long stretch of prime coastline provides for plenty of space and the beaches in this area are much less crowded than other areas, even in high season. There is no better option than to be stayed in the Costa de la Luz hotels for visiting these beaches:

El Palmar

The coastal settlement of El Palmar lies within Vejer municipality itself, but is located some 15 minutes’ drive from the town centre. There are basic services available at El Palmar, such as a small supermarket, a chemist and a branch of Vejer’s Tourist Office, but its foremost attraction is the wide sandy beach that stretches for more than 8km to the mouth of the Salado river at Conil de la Frontera, a highly recommended place to visit during your Costa de la Luz holidays. The waters around El Palmar are not particularly deep, so it is an ideal spot for practicing any number of watersports. Along the seafront there are several rental outlets for surfing and kitesurf equipment. Being one of the most popular beaches in the area, El Palmar offers a wide range of basic restaurants and bars which are mainly very laidback. At the most western end of the beach, towards Conil, is the area known as Castilnovo. On this stretch of sand clothes are entirely optional. El Palmar is also a beautiful place off-season, in winter, when you can almost have the place to yourself. With the longest days in Western Europe, when the sun is out you can still walk along the beach barefoot, go horse riding at the water’s edge, enjoy some quiet fishing and contemplate the marvelous sunsets that take place past six o’clock in the evening. The best option to completely enjoy this place of Andalucia is to stay in a hotel in Vejer de la Frontera.

Zahora and Zahara de los Atunes

This couple of similar-sounding places are in fact two different coastal settlements. Zahora is a small residential area located between El Palmar and the better-known Caños de Meca. Because of its somewhat complicated access, tucked away behind a maze of small roads and alleyways, the beach at Zahora is a 3km extension of pristine coastline, in a pure undeveloped state. There are few services in the area except for a couple of bars, so this is a good place for being in close contact with nature. At the southern end of Zahora lies the beach and lighthouse of Trafalgar, site of the famous naval battle of the same name that took place in 1805.

Further down the coast, about 20km from Vejer, lies the small town of Zahara de los Atunes. What used to be a fishing village of only 1250 souls, it is now a popular beach resort that swells tenfold in the summer months. The village offers a good range of restaurants, cooking up the best of what is caught in the area. Zahara is known for its festive atmosphere during summer nights, with plenty of bars, crafts markets and concerts that attract an easygoing, laidback crowd. It's a place that you should not miss during your Costa de la Luz holidays!

Canos de Meca

About 15km from your accommodation in Vejer de la Frontera lies the well-known settlement of Caños de Meca. The place got its name from the small waterfalls that used to tumble from the cliffs at La Breña. It was known by mariners all across the Mediterranean as a good place to get fresh water. It is said that the Arabs found the place so heavenly that they associated it with the holy city of Meca. Today it is a place for alternative crowds, inspiring a tolerant and relaxed atmosphere. Visitors to Caños can amble among the street stalls that sell all kinds of handicrafts, hang out at any of the numerous bars or beach shacks, or chill at the Castillejos beach which is a favorite hippy hangout.
